BILSTEIN B8 TerraSport: The Suspension Upgrade Your Customers Have Been Asking For.

The CUV’s Moment is Here

Overlanding has outgrown the full-size truck and SUV. A growing wave of enthusiasts are pushing Subaru Crosstreks, Toyota RAV4s, and Ford Bronco Sports into terrain these vehicles were never quite designed for. The appetite for exploration and experiencing the great outdoors is there. The aftermarket support, until recently, wasn’t.

For years, the only options available to CUV owners seeking additional ground clearance have been spacer lifts and aftermarket lift springs. Both deliver additional ride height. Both come with real compromises your customers feel every day behind the wheel. BILSTEIN designed the B8 TerraSport to solve that problem completely.

Where Spacers and Springs Fall Short

A spacer lift sits on top of the strut assembly between the spring perch and the vehicle’s mounting point, pushing the entire assembly downward to lift the body. They are inexpensive and simple to install. The trade-offs, however, are significant.

A spacer assembly adds length to the assembled shock. The shock was engineered by the OEM to operate within a specific range of compression and extension. A spacer changes the resting position within that range, leaving less room for the shock to do its job. The result is a firmer, less forgiving ride on exactly the kind of terrain CUV owners are trying to reach.

Spacers also affect suspension geometry. We documented a compelling example during our testing of a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek running a 1 1/2-inch front spacer and a 1 7/8-inch rear spacer. With the vehicle on the lift, we identified that the spacer setup was allowing the sway bar to interfere with the tie rod at full droop and full steering lock, directly causing a persistent rubbing and knocking noise off-road.

And critically, a spacer does nothing to change how the shock absorber responds to the road. The factory damper is now operating in a position it was never calibrated for. Height goes up. The quality of the ride stays the same, or gets worse.

Lift springs replace the factory coils with stiffer, taller units that raise the vehicle through increased spring height and rate. A stiffer spring rate means a stiffer ride. And because the dampers remain stock, the suspension is again operating outside of its intended parameters. The damper, tuned for a softer factory spring, cannot control that push with the same precision. The ride becomes choppy and unsettled.

Both spacers and springs address ride height while leaving damping performance completely untouched. They are static additions to a dynamic system.

BILSTEIN B8 TerraSport is Engineered as a Complete System

TerraSport replaces the dampers themselves with purpose-built units that are longer between the spring seat and the mounting point. This additional length repositions where the factory coil spring sits, raising the vehicle 1 to 2 inches depending on the application. The lift is inherent to the design of the shock itself.

Factory springs, hardware, and mounting points remain the same. Vehicles align to factory specifications the first time, every time. Everything works the way it should because BILSTEIN engineered TerraSport as a complete system by drawing on over 75 years of OEM engineering expertise. TerraSport just works.

Every single application is engineered, valved, and tuned for its specific year, make, and model. On the Subaru Crosstrek, the front uses a twin-tube strut built around a 36mm piston, with repositioned bottom mounting holes to preserve factory alignment. The rear uses monotube dampers built around a 46mm piston, sharing core technology with the proven BILSTEIN 5100 series. We even include details like an extended leveling sensor bracket for vehicles with self-leveling headlights.

At the core of every TerraSport damper is BILSTEIN’s patented digressive valving. It delivers a firmer damping rate at low piston speeds for confident body control during normal driving, then tapers off progressively as piston speed increases, allowing the suspension to absorb impacts with composure on rough terrain. Spacers and springs have no mechanism to deliver this kind of adaptive behavior. They are static components. Digressive valving is dynamic, responding in real time to every surface the vehicle encounters.

Why This Matters for Your Shop

Installation is straightforward, just like any other strut and shock, and a qualified technician can complete the job in an afternoon. Because TerraSport uses the vehicle’s existing coil springs, customers avoid the cost of aftermarket spring sets, making it a genuine suspension upgrade that costs less than many spacer-and-spring combinations. Every unit is backed by BILSTEIN’s leading limited lifetime warranty.
